Václav Machek

Václav Machek was the Czech foremost linguist and etymologist. He studied Latin and Czech at the Universitas Carolina in Prague and continued with Indo-European linguistics by prof. Josef Zubatý and prof. Oldřich Hujer. Since 1936 he was professor at the Masaryk University in Brno (Moravia). His main works are Studie o tvoření výrazů expresívních (1930, Study about creation of the expressive phrases), Recherches dans le domaine du lexique balto-slave (1934), Česká a slovenská jména rostlin (1954, Czech and Slovak plant-names) and Etymologický slovník jazyka českého a slovenského (1957; Etymological dictionary of the Czech and Slovak language), which was later restricted to Czech language only and simultaneously enlarged and revised as Etymologický slovník jazyka českého (1968, 1971, 1997 repr.; Etymological dictionary of the Czech language).
